Summer Leadership Institutes at the University at Buffalo

July 10-14, 2000 – “Building Instructional Leadership and Fiscal Capacity in Schools”

The Center for the Study of School–Site Leadership, in collaboration with the Graduate School of Education (GSE) at the University at Buffalo (UB), sponsored a five day Leadership Institute that involved presentations and small group workshops for 60 educators and interested community members concerned with building the capacity of schools to meet the new learning standards mandated in New York.

Keynote presenters included:

Bruce Cooper, Fordham University,
“Fiscal Leadership at the School-site: Maximizing Resources for Children.”

Fran Kochan, Auburn University,
“A Thousand Voices from the Firing Line”;

Kenneth Leithwood, University of Toronto,
“Changing Leadership for Changing Times”;

David Monk, The Pennsylvania State University,
“Investments in Professional Development: Trends, Challenges & Opportunities”;

In addition to the keynoters, GSE faculty members Doug Clements, Jim Collins Rod Doran, Suzanne Miller, Mary Rozendal, and Beth Troy conducted workshops addressing specific content areas covered by New York State’s New Learning Standards and the implications for curricular alignment and assessment embedded in those standards.

A generous grant from UCEA enabled the Center to give each participant a free copy of the report, “A Thousand Voices from the Firing Line”.



July 15-16, 2002 - “Standards for Successful School Leadership.”

The Center for the Study of School–Site Leadership, in collaboration with the GSE at UB, the Western New York Educational Service Council and the Committee to Identify and Develop Educational leadership (CIDEL), sponsored a two day Leadership Institute attended by 160 current and aspiring school leaders that was intended to help participants better understand and critique recently developed performance standards for administrator preparation and practice.

Participants also engaged in a series of panel discussions and interactive working sessions.
